about

Live recording of 'Kisuma, an original collaboration by 2019 Fellows, Kaviraj Singh and Rapasa Nyatrapasa Otieno.

"Kisuma is the term used for barter trade in my mother tongue, Dholuo (a dialect of the Luo people of western Kenya). Kavi and me used this collaboration to revisit the ways the Luo people have lived by exchanging goods within the local community - especially with the Indian community - and neighbouring countries. Kavi has family history in Kenya, but the collaboration came about by chance - we played a game during the Making Tracks residency where each participant was given a piece of paper with a shape drawn on it. We then had to find others with the same shape with our eyes closed and through sound. It was coincidental yet felt like we were meant to be together to explore our links with Kenya."
